First 4 axle crane truck.

I started this model late 1999. First serious attempt at a telescopic crane. This model is heavily inspired on the power crane (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/8854 ). I used the stabilizer legs and telescopic boom design from that model.

I unfortunately misplaced pictures of this model, so I only have five remaining here for the finished model. Driving/sterring is done manually. A motor powers a compressor. A motor to raise/lower the stabilizer legs, a motor to rotate the turntable, one to expand/retract the boom, and one more to work the hook.

right side view General view of the truck. Notice the rearmost axle is countersteered at 1/3 (roughly) ratio from the front axles.  In the back, you can see the motor working the boom (on top).
left side view This model definitely would not rank high on looks, but it worked pretty well.  The motor above the air tank rotates the turntable. The compressor is on top of the second front axle.
turret view Ready to work. Above the front axle, you can see the compressor. There are wires coming out everywhere; I only had one battery box and no extra polarity reversers. I was working on a non-lego remote control. 6 pneumatic pistons to raise/lower the boom. That actually worked very well, even with weight hanging on the hook.
working mode Top view of the crane. You can see the steering knob over the frontmost axle. Stabilizer legs were powered by an old-style black 12V motor. I thought 12V motor would have more torque, but not really.
complete view The counterweight box at the back of the turret is mounted on smooth 1x8 tiles, so that the counterweight moves forward or backward depending on amount of counterweight needed.
