Side loading container truck.
This is a truck chassis that has the capability to load containers by itself. Though not popular in the
U.S., they are common when deliveries are made to remote locations (like New-Zealand and Australia).
This model was built early 2001. The truck is powered by two geared-down motors.
Steering is done by a micro motor, and a remote air compressor (powered by
a regular motor) runs the air cylinders.
This project is broken down on two pages:
this page, which shows building steps and explanation
next page, which shows the truck in action.

You can see tandem steered axles in the
front. The container loading/unloading mechanism consists of 2 arms; one holding
the front of the container, the other one at the back. |
|
The rear 2 axles are driven by the geared down motors; you can see them on
each side of the truck, in front of the first rear axle. |
|
You can see the micro motor for steering, located at the very front of the truck.
The loading arms are seen here in the folded position. They consist of three air rams. |
|
The loading arms contain their own stabilizer arms, therefore the truck doesn't need them. |
|
Here you see the sideloading arms extended, ready to be attached to a container.
Notice how they have outriggers supporting them on the ground. |

Here are some more pictures of the finished truck with its trailer. |
